It's been too long since I last updated this site; but who cares.

I've spent most of my time over-indulging on Arctic Monkey's 2009 record 'Humbug'. I'll be honest and say I actually disliked their previous efforts and even caught then live a few years ago; what a borefest that was! My views haven't changed on their previous work, but 'Humbug' is a great record.

You may as well check out their new video for 'Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair' which was available on Record Store Day a few weeks back. I got my copy. BRAP!

Warpaint - The Fool

The official blurb says that "Warpaint is an all-girl quartet from Los Angeles. They weave intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals, and driving post-punk rhythms into gorgeous, sprawling songs that skirt the line between the soundscapes of psychedelia and intimacy." I couldn't put it any better myself.

I've been guided into the direction of Warpaint now for some time, but I've only recently had the opportunity to pick the record up and have a listen. I'm glad that I did.

The album is a big fat WOW! The production on this, fairly short but no filler all killer album is great. Everything is overly compressed, is drenched in a tonne of reverb and features intricate drum beats and plenty of inadvertently funky sub-bass lines to top it off. It works, the production is outstanding and fitting.

Warpaint's 'The Fool' is a beautiful and compelling album and it is a strong contender for album of the year! Check it out.

KLAXONS - Surfing the Void

There is something totally compelling about Klaxons. I don't know what but whatever it is, it has kept me sporadically checking their website over the last few years to see what the hell was going on. Usually I wouldn't care and would let such a band slip into the void.

Surfing the Void, Klaxons long awaited second album seems to have taken an eternity to complete. Apparently the album was pulled by their label on a number of occasions, which blows. I can see why, even now there are no perfect pop songs like you can find on their debut Myths of the Near Future.

There are some great ideas knocking around on this album, specifically the bass and guitar work. The bass tone on this album is superb, top end heavy and totally agressive and tense. The vocals and random lyrics, that sound like they were a bunch of words picked out of a hat really let this album down. The opening track and their current single Echoes is the standout track to Surfing the Void but tracks like Venusia and Flashover are worth a listen to.

For the record I'm a total fan of cats and astronauts for that matter and therefore totally dig the album cover. Weirdly the songs match up to the artwork. Think cats in space, playing heavy dirty distorted bass riffs and messed up guitar and keys.

Worth a listen. 3/5 smoldering vultures.

Them Crooked Vultures Announce Brixton Academy Show 'A BENEFIT FOR BRIAN O'CONNOR' - July 5th.

The new show, to be held July 5th at Brixton O2 Academy, has been organized to provide aid to TCV friend and Homme collaborator, Brian O’Connor.

Brian O’Connor, best known as the bass player for the Eagles of Death Metal, has been diagnosed with cancer, and is without medical insurance.

Net proceeds from the show will be donated to a fund set up to help with his medical bills.

Autolux have released a free track entitled 'Audience No.2' from their forthcoming album 'Transit Transit' on autolux.org. Alternatively, you can stream Audience No.2 through the bands myspace account, but why would you settle for that?! I honestly can't get enough of this track, and can't wait for the new record. It's dark and compelling.

Unfortunately there isn't a release date for 'Transit Transit' as of yet, but it will be released in the US & Japan through TBD Records and in the UK and 'the rest' through ATP Recordings. I'll keep you posted. Until then, check the links out below.

If you aren't aware, she's back with 'Hole'. Ok, I'll be honest, I really dig Hole and Courtney, BUT... what the fuck is she doing with this new lineup?

A member of Larrikin Love playing guitar, what the fuck. Those guys sucked! Some guy on drums who thinks dreads are cool and works for Hello! magazine, and some loser who has "done a lot of things with a lot of movie stars daughters". I only suspect it's been cooking their Big Mac they ordered.

If you read this Courtney, before it's too late, sack those losers off. I'll gladly step in on bass, I'm English too, you seem to dig that. Bad For Lazarus

Just the other day we 'vultured' out to Alsager in Staffordshire, which can only be described as the middle of nowhere, to watch Bad For Lazarus "do their thing" and fuck shit up. We were having the worst time waiting, in the coldest pub in the world, teeth chattering, nipples on hard! The good thing was we were never asked for the £5 the venue were asking for on the door, and then we ordered some drinks at the bar and we were told they were free! I spent £1.30 all night on a bag of nuts, fucking A! Bad for Lazarus put everything they'd got into their performance, jumping on everything in sight, loosing their balance at every given moment, and generally just enjoying themselves! It rubbed off on everybody who was watching and it turned from what was the worst night of the year into one of the most enjoyable. Thank you Bad For Lazarus.

Q&A with Dean Fertita (Hello=Fire & The Dead Weather)

Here's the next installment to our 'Q&A's with' archive. This time it's with Dean Fertita, who has been a member of countless rock super groups over the past couple of years. He has recently released a new solo record under the name Hello=Fire. Hear what he has to say about it all.

Q: How did you find time to write the Hello=Fire record? You've been busy working with so many bands recently!

A: Most of these songs were written in hotel rooms while on tour over the last couple years.

Q: How about showcasing these songs live, do you have any plans or desire to do so?
A: I would like to do shows, but it will depend on schedules. The Dead Weather are going back into the studio in December and hopefully we will have the new record out early next year. I'm sure I'll find time next year, but too early to tell when. Until I'm able to tour, most of the promotion will be through videos.

Q: Writing the songs is one thing, how did you find time to record the album, and where did you choose to record it?

A: The record was done in 6 studios from London to Los Angeles. I would work on days off from touring and fortunate that musicians that I was touring with wanted to record. We worked really fast. Most of the songs done in 2-3 takes. At the time I wasn't even sure I was making a record, so we just tried to capture the essence of the songs and move forward. Every one of the guys who played on the record were really inspiring.

Q: Who worked with you on the record?

A: Mikey (Michael Shuman) plays on 'Nature Of Our Minds'. Troy (Van Leeuwen) and Joey (Castillo) from QOTSA are on 'Far From It' and 'Mirror Each Other'. Brendan Benson and Michael Horrigan play on the rest of the record. Brendan really helped get this record going. We recorded 5-6 songs at his place in Detroit before he moved to Nashville. The record was mixed at Tempermill studio in Detroit with Dave Feeney. I think he really helped to give the record a continuity and identity. It's hard to do that when you record at so many different places with different musicians.

Q: I know deciding on a name can be a tricky and a little stupid, but how did you settle on Hello=Fire?
A: I had written it down a long time ago and came across it recently. I like the fact that it can have so many meanings. A command equals an action or something as simple as a hello can bring danger.

Q: What are your best memories from the last couple of years?

A: The last few years are filled with a lot of great memories. All of the pop up Third Man stores and the shows we've done around them along with the QOTSA Salt Mine show are some of the most exciting live experiences I've ever had. Playing on the soundtrack for Where The Wild Things Are with Karen O was unbelievable. The best part of working with all these incredible musicians and songwriters is that we're creating an army. We are all part of a family now.

Q: How did your most recent band The Dead Weather come about?
A: The Dead Weather formed accidentally. The Raconteurs and The Kills were on tour together. I had come down to see the last 2 shows in Nashville and Atlanta. The idea of recording a single for Jack's Third Man label came up after the last show, so we went back to Jack's studio for a day. We ended up with 5-6 songs in that first session and realized that there was more there than just a 7". We decided to get together again and finish things up. Before we knew it we had a record and were discussing a tour. Now we are a few weeks away from going back in the studio and starting work on our next record.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: Immediate plans for the future are recording the new Dead Weather album. We will re-evaluate once we are done and decide how we will approach next year. The Kills are also working on a new record, so there will be some things to figure out. I'm hoping that QOTSA has time to work on new material next year as well. If I see any available time, I will look into doing shows of my own. Alison said last year was the year of the daredevil and this one looks to be even more chaotic and perilous. I can't wait!!!

Q: What records have you been spinning recently?

A: I just got a copy of Them Crooked Vultures record and it is all I've been listening to.

Q:Who's releasing the Hello=Fire record, and when can we get it?

A: Schnitzel records is releasing it in the U.K. and Europe. They also put out the Ween records. I haven't decided what I will do in the states yet. Hello=Fire is out on vinyl now in the U.K. and Europe.

EMBD @ The Box, Crewe 27/10/2009

The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster made a detour to a nice new venue in Crewe called 'the Box', as part of their Rocktober tour. The turn out was pretty dire, and we could tell the band were pissed off as soon as we got there. Sym Gharial was dressed up as what can only be described as a wierd hybrid between Clint Eastwood's costume in 'A Fistful of Dollars' and 80's fashion at it's worst (think of Marty McFly in Back to the Future III), but each to their own.

Eighties Matchbox hit the stage with some force, kicking off with one of their new songs called 'Monsieur Cuts' which saw Guy McKnight jumping straight into the crowd, singing in peoples faces, pulling weird poses and climbing on everything he possibly could. This was a real punk show.... energy, sweat and ear bleeding sound levels. A girl even got hit in the face by a glass bottle. She was about the only person not to enjoy the gig, but I suppose that's understandable. They played a mammoth set, something which I've never encountered before at an Eighties Matchbox show, that showcased a number of new tracks from the forthcoming album, which is due out early 2010, and a selection of their 'hits'.

The Dead Weather Manchester Academy 19/10/09

The Dead Weather are currently touring Europe with Creature with the Atom Brain as tour support, and we were lucky enough to catch the first show of the tour at the Manchester Academy.

Creature started things off at the early time of 8:15, but being the only support act they played a mammoth set that covered songs from both the 'I Am the Golden Gate Bridge' and 'Transylvania' albums. They were loud, trashy and the bands sound which you would usually associate with intimate, sweaty clubs translated well to the big stage. If you haven't checked these guys out yet, I'm giving you one last chance.

The Dead Weather essentially played every song they had, strung together by what seemed like a 20 minute face-melting guitar solo by Jack White mid set. Their hearts were into it and they put on the performance of a lifetime, and considering it was the first show of the tour, wow! I have to admit The Dead Weathers LP 'Horehound' has had its fair share of spins at my house, but the live show was something else. The songs came across so much better than on record and I suggest that even if you vaguely like the record, you experience it live, If not only to see "Big, Mean Dean Fertita" shred it on guitar.

The show was great and my ears were literally bleeding by the end of the night. Result!

Soulsavers at the Ruby Lounge, Manchester

Monday night (24th August) saw the return of Soulsavers, featuring Mark Lanegan to Manchester's Ruby Lounge.

Support came from Soulsavers vocalist and touring member Rosa Agostino's solo project 'Red Ghost'... all the way from Sydney Australia! Armed with nothing but a guitar and a delay pedal, she showcased a number of heartfelt and brooding songs, keeping the audience captivated with her voice alone. The Ruby Lounge is an intimate underground venue in Manchester's city center, and was hotter than hell by the time Soulsavers took to the stage. The band pulled through the heat, and played an impressively long set, featuring both singles and fan favourites from their three album back catalogue. Highlights of the set included 'Death Bells', 'Revival' and 'Unbalanced Pieces'.

Soulsavers incorporate elements of soul, country and gospel into their music, and they are fronted by one of the best voices in rock music, Mark Lanegan. Their brilliant brand new album 'Broken' is available on V2 Records and also features Mike Patton and Red Ghost. The band are playing on the Festival Republic Stage at the Leeds/Reading Festival this weekend, prior to an extensive US Tour.

Brody Dalle unleashes her new band - and a new sound – on her debut album as Spinnerette released on June 15th on Anthem/Hassle Records

Spinnerette is the sound of a black leather glove holding a lollipop stick and shoving it into crushed glass before offering you the first lick. The 13 tracks featured on this eponymously titled record practically prowl out of your speakers.

Inspiration for the songs on the album comes from the twists and turns Dalle’s life has taken over the past three years. Having disbanded The Distillers in 2006, Dalle took time out to regroup and start a family with husband Joshua Homme. She began focusing on a new musical direction and the ways in which she could retain artistic control, whilst remaining firmly at the helm of her career. On her debut as Spinnerette, the joy of matrimony and motherhood contrasts sharply with illness striking those closest to her. As Dalle describes it, “Spinnerette is what happens when I let the tap flow”.

The Spinnerette album was recorded in Los Angeles at Pink Duck, the family studio of Joshua Homme & Brody Dalle, and at 11 AD the studio belonging to Spinnerette producer and band member Alain Johannes. In addition to Dalle and Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age, Eleven), the band line-up on the record includes Tony Bevilacqua (The Distillers), and Jack Irons (Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers).

Spinnerette return for summer festival dates and a UK tour, to be announced shortly.

Black Math Horseman - 'Wyllt'

Black Math Horseman's debut LP 'Wyllt'is a dark and brooding affair to say the least. To explain their sound in two words, 'progressive' and 'metal' come to mind. From the opening track 'Tyrant' until the epic 11 minute, 9 second finale 'Birds of All Faiths and None' intricate guitar riffs and harrowing vocals build up to create a dark soundscape which would not sound out of place backing a hollywood blockbuster (think watchmen, max payne etc). The record was produced by Scott Reeder, and the LP has some badass artwork created by band member Sera Timms. Review - My Jerusalem Without Feathers EP

My Jerusalem is the new band brought to you by Jeff Klein (Twilight Singers, Gutter Twins), Dave Rosser (Twilight Singers, Gutter Twins), Ashley Dzerigian (formally of Great Northern), drummer Cully Symington (formally of Bishop Allen, now with The Gutter Twins) and multi-instrumentalist Rick Nelson (of The Polyphonic Spree and St. Vincent).

The 'Without Feathers' EP is the first outing for the band; who have currently just finished doing the live rounds at SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas. Whilst Greg Dulli is off writing and recording the new Twilight record, we guess this is how Dave and Jeff will be filling the time. However, to say this project was just "filling time" would be totally the wrong notion and the new materials creeping from the My Jerusalem camp are evidence to support this.

The EP launches itself out of the starting blocks with the driving 'Sweet Chariot'. A song carried by a thumping bass line, the catchy wailing of Dave Rosser's trumpet and Cully's fierce drums; all accented by Klein’s powerful, yet sorrowful screams.
'Turtledove' is another standout track. Jeff Klein's haunting vocals echo out over an acoustic/piano charged affair. This song highlights Klein's relatively simple but highly effective approach to songwriting, as you begin to realise that this man doesn't have the scope to write a bad tune in him.

Overall, the EP hosts an eclectic mix of really great songs and considering the band is in its infancy, we think that this is really just the start of things to come. Brace yourselves.

Q&A With Evan Weiss (Wires on Fire/ Slang Chickens/ Jubilee)

Here goes Q&A Session 4! We're rolling them out aren't we?!
This time we got Evan Weiss from LA bands Wires on Fire and Slang Chickens to answer a bunch of serious and stupid questions which we were interested in knowing about! Hopefully you find Evans answers as interesting as we did!

SV: How did you get into playing music? Where did the interest all start?

EW: I was 8 or 9 years old when I began to pay attention to the radio and MTV, and discovered my love for rock and pop music. I think the early/mid 90s were a much more exciting time for a little kid to discover popular music. I was amazed by everything from Nirvana to Snoop Dog. About a year or so later my dad showed me how to play a few chords on the guitar and it all grew from there. I’ve been playing in bands ever since.

SV: What’s the deal with Wires on Fire? The last time we met, when you were in the UK with Jubilee, you mentioned you had a new Wires record ready to go? What’s the status?

EW: Wires On Fire is still a band; we just don't exist the way in which we used to. Yes, we are almost done with over an albums worth of material... everyone's crazy schedules has made it difficult to finish, but we will finish soon. Mike and I just have to finish up some vocals. It’s definitely the best stuff we’ve ever done.

SV: The Annie Carr 7” Single was released mid last year through your own label ‘Psychedelic Judaism’, and you played a few shows in LA in support of the single, how did the single and shows go down?

EW: I'm really proud of the single, and the shows we played in support of it were a total blast.

SV: How come you released the single yourself rather than on Buddyhead, who you previously released material with?

EW: I wanted to try something new. I’ve always wanted to release a record. I do Psychedelic Judaism with Jon Weston, who has been my best friend since I was 2 years old. We grew up collecting records together, and always talked about wanting to put something out. It seemed like the perfect opportunity, so we did it.

SV: What intentions do you have with your new label ‘Psychedelic Judaism’? Will you be releasing anything other than your own material?

EW: The intention for Psychedelic Judaism is to put out stuff that Jon and I believe in and want to share with other people. PJ002 will be the Slang Chickens LP, but yes, we do plan to release stuff that I am not musically involved with, haha.

SV: The newer Wires on Fire material we’ve heard seems to have toned-down somewhat on the Punk sound since the Home Wrecker EP days. Has this been a conscious effort?

EW: Well I think that’s a relative statement. What does punk mean? To me punk is the spirit of doing whatever you want, on your own terms. It’s not a drumbeat or a haircut. For me, taking the band and our music in a new direction is the most punk thing we can do. It’s not been a conscious effort. I've always moved in a direction that feels natural to me, and I don't really think about it. I just do it. It would be sad and shitty if we were making the same kind of records that we did when we were 18! That being said, I am proud of everything we've done.

SV: Since I mentioned Jubilee earlier, did you enjoy the small UK tour you did with them?

EW: Yeah, it was fun for the most part.

SV: What was the reason for leaving Jubilee so early on?

EW: The shoe didn't fit. I found myself at odds with the group both musically and philosophically. It was obvious to everyone involved that it was not working, and it was a rather easy, amicable, and mutual split.

SV: Slang Chickens is your new project, what is it you are aiming to do with your new band?

EW: Slang Chickens is a band that we planted the seeds for sometime in 2007, but didn’t really get things going until mid 2008, playing our first show that May. It's been a total riot. I don’t think we are aiming to do anything other than be Slang Chickens!

SV: You played a number of shows in NY late last year, how did they go? The place looked beautiful!

EW: Great first tour. We went to the east coast to play some shows at CMJ as well as a handful of northeastern shows with my brother Darren's new band, PAPA. The northeast in the fall is a really beautiful place.

SV: Are you also recording Slang Chickens material with Michael Harris? How is that going and is there any sort of release plans?

EW: Yes, we are just about done with our LP. We’ll be mixing it next week. I am super stoked. I love working with Michael, we have really similar tastes and sensibilities, not to mention he’s one of the greatest dudes on the planet. Jon and I are going to put it out on Psych J.

SV: Favourite Wires on Fire/Slang Chickens song?

EW: Cant answer this one!

Q&A: Rich Fownes (Bad For Lazarus/ Eighties Matchbox)

Ok, here's the 3rd of our 'Questions and Answers with....' section. This time we got to talk to a very nice guy called Rich Fownes. If you are unaware of Rich, he has played in With Scissors and The Eighties Matchbox B-line Disaster, and now we've had chance to find out what he has been up to since. Enjoy.

SV: How did your interest and career in playing and writing music start?

RF: Like a zillion other kids, I heard Nirvana in '95 and that was that. Their 'In Utero' album, the first Foo Fighters, and Melvin's 'Houdini' really left a mark, and in that year I knew that was what I wanted to do. I got really into song writing and was unreasonably obsessed with the idea that every second had to be utterly original and HEAVY...hence what became With Scissors. I still needed to nurture my first Mudhoney-shaped, punk aspirations though, and heard Eighties Matchbox were on the lookout...why start your own shitty punk band when you can just join the best?

SV: Since you’ve left Eighties Matchbox what have you been up to?

RF: I rehearsed with a few bands, some you obviously heard about and others you won't have. I had some reeeaally interesting offers I had to decline in favour of doing my personal work at the moment. It's the first time I felt so confident about my own music and it would have been wrong to ignore that. I've ended up in three projects. Bad For Lazarus, another which will be out this year (with Mikee Goodman and James Hunter of Sikth and Johnny Truant...and isn't metal at all!!), and yet another which will be contorted gabba / mind-kill / electronic called The Fag Enablers with Paul Stoney from Metsuo, who I also worked with on the soundtrack to the Max Payne movie last year.

SV: What was it like playing for UNKLE and how did that come about?

RF: It's always amazing fun. For one thing they're such great guys, a really interesting, odd, little family. It was great for my songwriting aswell. As a collaborative project, each track is built by a totally different genius; and getting inside so many songs so precisely teaches you infinate ideas about how people build parts, and what space to leave, and why. We met when Eighties Matchbox went to do a song with UNKLE on their 'War Stories' album. We had a great time working together that day, and James Lavelle approached me because he said he wanted the show to be really lively, not as rigid and programmed as people were probably expecting from an UNKLE gig.

SV: What happened with the whole NIN situation? It was released at the time you were going to be a touring member on Bass?

RF: I wish I could give you a really juicy conspiracy, but when it's not right it's as simple as that.

SV: You recently played a short stint of around 9 shows in the UK with your new band Bad for Lazarus, how did they go?

RF: Those gigs were so good! I knew it was going to be good enough, but I didn't expect to fall in love with us live like I did, and certainly not that fast. It was beautifully messy onstage, I still have a massive scar on my shin and knee and it was months ago now. I fly kicked a midget in our first show, and you don't get that very much these days. I must emphasise that it was a total accident, and he seemed really happy about it.

SV: Bad for Lazarus will be releasing its debut EP for free, why?

RF: For one thing I assume most people are as poor as us. I know I can't blow a tenner on every DIY release I'd like to, and I'm sure I miss out on alot of good stuff because of that. I just want this band to be about fun, and I want people to hear it. It's that simple. So when thinking it out, I really didn't see an upshot to charging anyone for it, and thought loads of people probably wouldn't have the chance to happen upon the band. The idea of doing a poppy band of this standard without the concern of industry bullshit or money make me smile so much; so if anything it's totally selfish.

SV: When will the EP be released and through which label? Why did you decide to do it this way?

RF: May / June through Undergroove. I was going to just host it online myself, but ended up sending Darren Sadler from Undergroove a cheeky email to see if he wanted to get involved. I was pretty surprised how fast he replied, and how into it he was. I was only interested in working with them, In At The Deep End or Fat Cat. They jumped out to me as the only UK DIY labels that do wanders for the kinds of bands I'm into without caring about profit margins.

SV: Are we correct in hearing you’re not only a pretty face, but you also recorded the EP yourself? Haha

RF: Yes and no. I produced it every step of the way but with some exceptionally talented and friendly people helping me out for next to nothing. It wouldn't have been anything like it is without their expertise. I try and get the guys to play as much of their own stuff as possible as well to capture our own swing and groove. They all have really good taste, ideas and vibe, so take it out of the solo project realm and into a band dimension. So even though it's my ideas it wouldn't sound any good without the amazing people that cared about it with me.

SV: Favourite Cold Beverage?

RF: Richard 'Griff" Griffith's refrigerated semen. One shot every morning to remind me whose boss. You won't have heard of him yet, but watch out for one of those VH1 specials in 5-10 years. It'll all make sense.

SV: Is there anything you would like to make everybody aware of?

RF: Yes! The best UK bands around at the moment;

Nick Cave Exclusive

Some of Nick Cave's finest work has been his recent involvement in film soundtracks. He is adept at creating haunting melodys and melancholy instrumentals that capture the stark mood required for such films as The proposition and The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford. The latest soundtrack he is working on is for 'The Road', a film based on a story by Cormac Mccarthy (the writer behind No country for old men) depicting the survival of a father and son in a post apocalyptic world which is perfectly suited to Nick Cave's brooding, atmospheric songs.

Q & A: Aldo Struyf of Creature With The Atom Brain

How are you feeling today? Do you wish every night was a Saturday night like us?

Every day is a Saturday ... so every night is a Saturday night. I feel good.

We expect the past few months have been a very busy time for you?

Especially last month. We recorded the album in two weeks and had eight days to mix. Yesterday John Golden mastered the album. So we worked day and night.

Tell us about the new album…what kind of sound were you going for? What are you calling it?

It's going to be called 'Transylvania'. As we listen to lots of 6Ts (eg C.A. Quintet, Common People, Rodriguez, Jake Holmes, Beau, ...) and 7Ts (lots of prog) lately, that sound influenced us a lot. Also the music of people like Erkin Koray and some of the Sublime Frequencies records has its effect on the new album. It'll be different I guess. Less freaky.

‘I Am The Golden Gate Bridge’ was a brilliant record considering the budget and resources you recorded it on, How did recording the album this time differ from last time? Was it an easier process in terms of knowing what you wanted to achieve?

We wanted to make a 'simple' album : just drums, bass, guitars and voice, simple riffs and no tricks. This makes it a bit harder I guess. As for recording it, we had the same budget as last one : NO. We just borrowed some money to have Chris Goss, great guy, mix it. A friend of ours, Pascal Deweze of Sukilove, offered some time in his studio to record drums and bass, the rest I did myself, just like last time.

What was it like working with Ed Monsef and Chris Goss? You and Chris have worked together before…guys like a full-time genius, huh?

Indeed, we did work together before (recording Mark's Bubblegum record) and I really like working with him. He is a genius ! Also Ed is great, he works with Chris the whole time. They worked together on last Duke Spirit albun, Goon Moon, some QOTSA besides, ... . They surely made our album sound really good for an almost no budget production.

What tracks are you excited about everybody hearing from the new record?

Can't tell, I heard 'm too often. Can't listen to them anymore for now.

Can we expect any special guests to feature on any of the tracks?

Mark Lanegan is singing a song and Koen Kohlbacher ( from 'Birds that change colour') sings along on two tracks.

What is it like working with Mark Lanegan? Do you two have any ideas in the pipeline for future projects?

I love working with Mark and he became one of my best friends, so it always is fun. He's one of the best singers on the planet so I'm proud he sings on our two albums. I'd love to contribute to a new 'Mark Lanegan Band' album but for now he'll be touring with Dulli, Isobel and Soulsavers.

How was touring the last record? You got to tour with bands such as Jesus and Mary Chain, QOTSA and The Gutter Twins, that must have been a great experience?

It sure was. We enjoyed supporting those bands. Also Butthole Surfers and Black Rebel M.C. . It's a perfect way to have people notice us obviously and as we know some of the bands personally we enjoyed every minute, especially Queens and Twilight Singers. With Jesus and Mary Chain we had the opportunity to play for lots of people in the States and London what was really cool.

Are you guys hoping to tour the new album this year?

Of course. Starting in Holland end of March, then Belgium and I hope we'll play some shows in England and the rest of Europe this summer. There's a good change we'll be supporting Masters of Reality next spring.

Aha, this question I like. I hope so, but that's up to Timmi (Vanhamel). At the moment he's working on some dance stuff with Tom Barman and others. Nothing for me, you have to live the life of 'a dance dude' to make dance music and I don't live that life.

Spinnerette @ Birmingham O2 Academy

Tuesday night at the Birmingham Academy saw the second of only two UK shows from Spinnerette, Brody Dalle and Tony Bevilacqua's new project. Compared to their previous band The Distillers, Spinnerette moves away from the punk rock sound they were originally known for and instead sounds somewhat like a mix of Hole and Queens of the Stone Age, which is not suprising considering the pair worked with Alain Johannes (long time friend, collaborator and cohort of Queens' Homme).

The band showcased a number of songs which are set for their new record, which will be released later this year, and all of the tracks from their debut downloadable EP. Brody and Tony were joined by three other tour members including Veruca Salt's Nicole Fiorentino (Bass), Black Math Horseman's Bryan Tulao (Guitar) and The Drip's Dave Hidalgo Jr (Drums).

The band looked comfortable with the tunes on offer here tonight and the quality of Brody's newly written material really shines through. Gone are The Distillers punk scrawl's (There ain't nothin' wrong with that either) but replacing them are catchy, sturdy rock and roll tunes. Brody has one kick-ass voice and this time shes letting us all know. Bring on the album and tour we say!

Here at Smokin' Vulture we love our rock heavy, melodic and innovative. For over ten years now LA-based band the Burning Brides have been doing just that. The dynamic husband and wife duo of Dimitri (guitar, vocals) and Melanie Coats (bass, vocals) have an impressive back catalogue of four albums under the BB moniker, as well as appearances on various other projects including Chris Cornell and Mark Lanegan solo projects. The trio are completed by hard-hitting drummer Pete Beeman (formerly of The Guzzards), who joined the band back in 2005. The band recently released 'Anhedonia' in the summer of 2008. A year that is a rather significant landmark in the Brides story with Melanie giving birth to a baby girl. Smokin' Vulture got the chance to speak to Dimitri recently, here's what he had to say:

SV: Firstly, congratulations on fatherhood dude! How does it feel?

DC: Thanks man. Feels amazing. Very psychedelic.

SV: Have you and Melanie been taking plenty of time off then?

DC: Well she toured pregnant twice and we're getting ready to go out again this spring and summer but yeah, for us this is a lot of time off. One year we played over 300 shows. I've been staying busy producing the new Circle Jerk album. I also just acted in a crazy rock n roll vampire film called Suck with Malcolm McDowell, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, and Henry Rollins. Should come out around Halloween.

SV: You funded and recorded the last two records, right? How did that one work out for you guys?

DC: We control our masters which, to any band these days, is crucial in the long run. The music business is falling apart and changing. We've tried to adapt. Obviously there are things a label can do for you but for the most part we've created the same opportunities and survived. We're lucky in that we've always been a band's band.

SV: ‘Anhedonia’ is an awesome record. Are you glad at how that record sounds?

DC: Thanks. Yeah for sure. Especially considering how fast we made it. The whole thing was recorded and mixed in 3 weeks. I think 'Anhedonia' sounds pretty huge. I made a conscious choice to lay off the Big Muff this time and let the natural sound of the guitars and amps breath. It's a bit more laid back when compared to 'Hang Love' but that was the idea. I'm proud of the fact that each one of our albums sounds different.

SV: What would be your advice to someone who wanted to put out a record on their own?

DC: You either need to figure out how to record yourself, which isn't easy to do well, or save up a bunch of money. These days there are too many bands. It's hard to sift through all the bullshit. I'm glad we emerged when we did although, had we come out in the early nineties, I might be a millionaire. Haha.

SV: In your opinion, which Brides song is the best song you’ve ever written?

DC: That's tough to say. We have such a wide range of songs in various styles. They're like my children. I guess it depends on what mood I'm in.

SV: You have a pretty unique guitar style, who would you say are your biggest influences?

DC: Billy Gibbons, Jimi Hendrix, and Jimmy Page are the first that come to mind. I can hear Slayer and Sonic Youth in there at times. I'm more into songwriters and bands than guitar players. With the guitar I'm just trying to serve the song.

SV: You’ve toured with some of the giants in the business (Audioslave, Manson, Mastodon, QOTSA, Helmet to name but a few…) Who was the most fun to hit the road with?

DC: Mastodon. Those boys know how to have a good time. I'm still recovering from that tour. Haha.

SV: If you hadn’t have started the band, what would you be doing instead?

DC: I'd probably be an actor. That's what I studied in school.

SV: What records are you digging lately?

DC: I've really been enjoying what I believe is going to be the new Capitol Years album. It's really just one guy, Shai Halperin, who makes beautiful and sophisticated music out of his apartment in Philadelphia. I've also been obsessed with the first Captain Beyond album and recently been checking out Stone Temple Pilots. They weren't as bad as I originally thought. Good tunes are good tunes.

SV: Favourite cold beverage?

DC: I drink Arnold Palmers a lot here in Los Angeles. That's half lemonade and half ice tea.

SV: Favourite vinyl in your collection?

DC: That's also difficult to answer. I have quite a collection. The Beatles are my all time favorite band so perhaps the Mobile Fidelity box set.

SV: Will you be going back into the studio soon?

DC: I hope so. I'm toying with the idea of making a solo album. I have a bunch of mellow songs I've been saving up that aren't really Brides material. I'm always writing for the band though. I have a cool idea for the next two albums.

SV: Lastly, Who from past or present would you love to record music with? (We will not accept David Hasselhoff as an answer dude, sorry)

DC: John Lennon I guess. Since you said past I could go on and on. If we're only talking present I'd say Neil Young or Bob Dylan. Are these not the greatest of all time?

SV: Dimitri, thanks! Good luck with the new stuff. We can't wait to check out 'Suck' either! See ya soon man.
